All About Me: I'm a 24 year old Biomedical Engineer from Northern VA. I was born in India and my family moved to the US when I was 8 years old. I graduated with my B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Psychology from The George Washington University and I'll be graduating with my M.Eng degree in Bioengineering from University of Maryland this month. I'm a complete nerd. I love to dance, cook (and EAT), watch too much TV, and I'm very adventurous (like I've jumped out of a plane adventurous). I have a weird phobia of fish and other little sea creatures. However, I have been swimming with dolphins and that was just fine. I'm a complete weirdo, sarcastic and love to laugh and make people laugh with my cheesy puns.
When did you start your fitness journey? My fitness journey started not too long ago. When I was younger, I didn't really participate in sports much. I played volleyball for a year in middle school but didn't continue with it. I have al- ways loved to dance though, and have performed many times. I was on a compet- itive Indian dance team for my first 3 years in undergrad. With that and walking everywhere, living in DC, I got a good amount of activity, but my eating habits were terrible and my metabolism was slowing down. I had also gone through a tough life event that caused me to be depressed and lose all self-confidence and go through a phase of partying and alcohol abuse. By the time I graduated, I had gained almost 30 pounds and more than that I was very unhappy every time I looked in the mirror and hated having to buy bigger and bigger clothes. After I graduated, moved back home, and started working full time, I realized it was time to be responsible, I wanted to fit into my old clothes again and lose weight. I start- ed working out and improving my eating habits but had no idea what I was doing. I would research and read and learn so many things. Finally I found Tone It Up and the support from that community and the tools and workouts changed me for the better. Though the process started for superficial reasons, I quickly learned how treating my body right with exercise and nutrition drastically improved my life and made me so much happier. I finally had control over my life again and haven't looked back since. I also discovered the sweat a day community on instagram, and instagram yoga challenges, and move more fitness. All these instagram chal- lenges have taught me so much about fitness and more importantly given me a chance to surround myself with incredible, inspiring communities just like the Move More Fitness Ambassadors. I'm so grateful for this turn I took in life for the better.
What is your favorite Workout? This is a tough one because I love all forms of movement, from dancing to spinning to hiking but I have to say through it all Yoga has to be my favorite. It gives me more than just a workout, it connects me with my body and helps me look inward to focus on not just physical improvement but mental and emo- tional development too.
Words of Wisdom from Shreya: I've gained so much confidence, strength, happi- ness and much more through my journey to a fit life, and I want to share it with others so they can feel the same. This is why I'm cur- rently studying for my personal training certi- fication exam and working on starting a blog. Down the road I also want to become an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and Spin instructor.
