At some point in their lives, most people have had what I like to call “happy fat.” It certainly happened to me. I was in love, I was happy, and I was comfortable. Serving size, what’s that? Portion control? No thanks! Gym? Sure, I pass them every day.
Then I got engaged. It dawned on me that back fat and arm jiggle did not belong in my wedding pictures. Think I hit the ground running on day one? Nope. I got engaged in September but continued with the “I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude. Then I went dress shopping in March.
The first dress I tried on fit like a glove. It was perfect—meant to be. But thank you, bridesmaids, for taking pictures! There it was in print: double chin, arm fat, a few extra belly rolls, and the dreaded back fat. I was shocked into reality. I did not want to be this big walking down the aisle for all 150 guests to see. So I signed up for a gym membership. I now had seven months.
I am not a gym kind of girl so I opted to do group classes four days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. I also joined Weight Watchers. At the end of the very first week I had lost a few pounds and suddenly I believed I could do this!
Guess what, I did it! I went from 210lbs to my wedding weight of 157lbs—53lbs gone! A size 18 to a size 10.
I’ve put back on just 5lbs since my wedding last year, but I’ve resolved to never again revisit the “happy fat.” Instead, I’ll just be happy while still maintaining balance! The only thing I regret is having bought my wedding dress too soon. It was quite expensive taking it in all those inches!
