All About Me:
I am BLESSED to be called "Mom" to my 2 little boys and married to an incredible man who has put up with all my shenanigans for the last 15 years lol! I've lived in San Diego, California all my life and one day I'd love to move to Honolulu, HI. I went to school to become a TV journalist and realized through the 16 hr work days, I'd rather be behind the camera making everyone beautiful instead! I traded the pencil and notepad for lipstick, makeup brushes and hairspray and became a professional hair and makeup artist. After I had my 2nd son, I decided to raise my kids full-time and do freelance hair and makeup on the weekends. Now that both my kids are in school, I decided to pursue my dreams of a career in health and fitness. I'm currently studying to become a group fitness instructor and personal trainer and researching studios to do Yoga teacher training. Juggling family, home, school and a few makeup gigs here and there can be challenging but I wouldn't have it any other way! One of my purposes in life is to show my children that you can have and do anything you want in life but you have to work extremely hard for it! Quality work pays off in ALL areas of your life!
When did you start your fitness journey?
It all started about 5 yrs ago when my youngest son turned 1. It was during his 1st birthday party. I bent over incorrectly to pick him up and somehow dislocated my left knee and almost dropped him. It was awful! During my 1st physical therapy session, everything out of my therapists mouth was bad news...poor muscle tone, weak ligaments, limited degrees of mobility to name a few. I was also a stay at home mom with 2 little boys with me all day everyday trying to manage everything on one leg. I was also 35lbs over weight and unhappy about everything! I was not the mom, wife or person I wanted to be! My family deserved better! I deserved better! First I joined the gym and my kids hated the daycare there. I would get called to tend to them every minute so that idea didn't work out lol! So I moved the gym to my house and learned how to workout with my kids. Soon physical fitness became part of our daily routine. My family became my cheer squad and I think that's why fitness has stuck with us successfully through soo many years. We Move Together and Do Together!
Who or what inspires you to Move More and Do More?
Definitely my family! I'm a much more happier and better person to be around when I've had my coffee and my sweat session for the day lol! No joke, my family will beg me to do something physical if I'm being crabby because they know it's my happy pill. As much as I love fitness, I also have many days where it's hard to get up and move! Those are the days where I tell myself, "Kathy, if you don't get your butt up how do you expect the kids to get up and do things they may not want to do too?" Sometimes you don't think your kids are watching or listening, but they are! Just that alone makes me very conscious of everything I do and motivates me every day to put my best self forward.
What is your favorite workout?
YOGA! I seriously cannot go a single day without it! Hence my overuse of the hashtag #yogaeverydamnday lol! Yoga not only makes my body sweat buckets but it makes my mind and soul sweat too but in a more gentle and calm way. It's the only form of activity where I can spill my heart and emotions all over my mat, connect with my intentions, sort out my issues, roll it back up, bow to Namaste and be on my way to a fantastic day! Oh, and bending, sweating and flipping around is a tiny part of the fun too. So that's the Yin. I also need some Yang to balance it all out...power jumps, BURPEES, push-ups, push-ups and PUSH-UPS! Tabata, HIIT and interval training are my favorite in between the Yoga. The one thing I've learned through this journey is the importance of BALANCE and PRESENCE! ANYTHING in large quantities is never a good thing. Finding that balance in life where everything gets equal attention is tough but is soo critical to living a happy and healthy life. I use to obsess over food and exercise because I wanted a perfect "looking" body to the point where it interfered with socializing and the joy of living. Go out and have real ice cream and hamburgers with your family. Be present and really take in the moments that truly matter. Before you know it, you missed that precious smile your little one made when diving into that sundae all while you were too busy calculating your macros. Been there, never doing it again! I love bacon just as much as kale and cheese cake is just as important to me as my Quest bars lol! A high-intense bootcamp class is awesome but I look forward to playing soccer at a park with my family on the weekend. Throw out the clutter and find your balance and if you're still feeling wobbly...reach higher for your answers (I usually find it in half-moon pose lol). The higher you reach, the more stable you'll feel. Thank you Move More Fitness and the inspiring family of ambassadors for everything! Your support, friendship and the many ways you teach and inspire everyday are just a few of the things I'll always be grateful for! Way too many to list!
